    Overview

    Description

On the east rim of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, the 585-acre Leonard Harrison State Park has modern facilities, a seasonally operated gift shop, a visitor center, and the most famous scenic views of the canyon. Visitors can hike down the strenuous Turkey Path to the Pine Creek Rail Trail and see a scenic waterfall. The 62-mile Pine Creek Trail is a multi-use trail for hiking, bicycling, and cross-country skiing. Located at the bottom of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, one mile of this trail is in Leonard Harrison and Colton Point state parks. Horseback riding is only permitted on the dirt access road immediately beside the Pine Creek Trail for a nine-mile length from Ansonia to Tiadaghton. Horseback riding is not permitted on the limestone gravel trail. The Horseback trailhead is along Marsh Creek Road near the junction of US 6 and PA 362 at Ansonia. On the other side of the canyon is Colton Point State Park.

    Geography:

As part of the Pine Creek Gorge National Natural Landmark, the park is evidence of the power of glacial melt water, having reversed a stream, and carving a path southward through the Allegheny Plateau. Visitors will have a bird-eye view of the modern-day Pine Creek over 800 feet below the overlooks as well as thousands of acres of the Tioga State Forest to the west. Pine Creek is designated as a Pennsylvania Scenic and Wild River and offers fishing and seasonal rafting, canoeing and kayaking. The most popular trail, The Turkey Path, traverses the rugged and steep side hill over the course of a mile passing by waterfalls on its way to the floor of the canyon where it meets the Pine Creek Rail Trail. Wildlife is abundant and highlights include bear, deer and turkey as well as bald eagles and ravens. River otters were reintroduced in the 1980's and can be seen occasionally along the waterways.
